The Corrado a used car classic
If you’re looking for a used car and quite like the idea of it eventually becoming a classic then what you need is a car that’s not yet a classic but one day will be. A classic “waiting in the wings” if you will.
What you’re looking for is a used car that’s still young enough to look at, that’s still good enough to drive, a car that’s reliable but still old enough to have been forgotten. We say, what you’re looking for is a car like the Volkswagen Corrado VR6.
The Corrado was Volkswagen’s sports coupe of the nineties and we think it’s still really rather special even by today’s standards. Even though under the skin it’s a bit of a mongrel where it’s sort of been cobbled together from bits of even older VW’s. For example, you’ll find Passat in the rear suspension and a bit of MkII Golf in the front. However VW certainly knew what they were doing as the resulting car was fantastic. Owners would say that the Corrado VR6 drives as well as if not better than many of the cars produced fifteen years later. The Corrado isn’t sluggish either in fact it’s extremely quick. You’ll quite easily get from 0-60 in just over six and a half seconds – this is quick even by today’s standards.
The 2.9 litre V6 up front will produce a commendable 190bhp bringing with it a truly fantastic soundtrack. Of course there are other versions available but the VR6 is certainly the one to go for. This is simply because the VR6 engine is one of the best that VW ever built.
So, the Corrado’s looks and performance goes some way to making it a future classic but there’s another factor that’s even more important. When the Corrado came out all of those year ago it was actually a complete flop! It was far too expensive for the time and nobody really bought it but what this now means is that it’s actually quite rare. There’s one more thing too, it’s the only nineties coupe that was quite respectable and in this list we include cars like Vauxhall’s Calibra, Ford’s Probe and Toyota’s Celica!
