The Ford Mondeo takes it's name from the Latin mundus, meaning "world", which is apt, because - now it's in its fourth generation - there can be few better-known family cars across the globe. And it has to be, because it's against some tough competition, including the Mazda 6, the Skoda Superb and the VW Passat. So, what is it about the Mondeo that appeals? In fact, the huge selection includes petrol, diesel and hybrid options, all offering good performance. And while their economy falls short of best-in-class, they all deliver respectable fuel consumption and emission levels. The best engine in the range, in terms of efficiency, is the 1.5 TDCi Duratorq, which delivers 78.5mpg with a CO2 emission level of only 94g/km. And that's not all. The Mondeo's pretty sleek these days, too. In an effort to shed the 'Mondeo Man' image that the car had a while back, Ford has given the car a more sophisticated, aerodynamic look, which features an arching roofline, lower suspension, honeycombe grille and tinted windows. All in all, today's Mondeo is a good mix of style, space and practicality.
