When they replaced the Peugeot 307 with the 308, they also took the opportunity to redesign it from the ground up, adding a whole bunch of impressive improvements to position it against the likes of the Ford Focus, the Volkswagen Golf and the Vauxhall Astra. The result? A good looker that abounds with trendy styling features, such as a chrome exterior trim, LED daytime lights and headlights on several trim levels. And it's not just on the outside that the 308 is noticeably different. Climb inside, and the first thing you'll notice is its chic new 'i-Cockpit', which has few physical switches, a small steering wheel and a large central touchscreen. You're not short of choice when it comes to engines, either, with a number of petrol or diesel versions to choose from, all of them delivering decently low running costs. In this respect, the 1.6-litre BlueHDi 120 diesel is the star of the show, retuning a highly impressive 91.1mpg and emissions of CO2 as low as 82g/km (depending on wheels). With a wide range of optional extras, and a high safety rating from Euro NCAP, this is a smooth, refined and comfortable car which is good value for money.
