The models that used car buyers are likely to encounter are those produced during the MG Rover period. The brand was sold by BMW in 2000 and returned to British ownership by the MG Rover Group based in Longbridge, Birmingham. During the five-year window before it went into receivership in 2005, MG Rover produced a range of family car platforms that gave rise to MG and Rover-badged models. The MG versions had a sportier flavour to their styling, interior trim and, in some cases, performance. The MG ZR was the supermini and an affordable way to get a sporty-looking hatchback. The 1.8-litre engined ZR 160 had the pace to back up its image and there was even an MG Express van version. The ZS was a compact saloon built to a similar formula and available in rapid ZS 180 guise. Low prices kept sales levels high and should ensure a reasonable choice of used cars. The most convincing model in the range was probably the ZT, a larger saloon with classy looks and an engaging driving experience. It was also offered in ZT-T estate guise and performance fans might like to search out used second hand versions of the rare ZT 260 which had a 4.6-litre V8 and rear-wheel-drive. The other desirable pre-owned MGs are the MGF and MG TF roadsters. Credible used car rivals for Mazda's MX-5, they're fun to drive and reasonably well built. Under Chinese ownership, MG returned to the UK in 2009 with a lightly modified version of the TF.
