Saab is a car manufacturer with style, individuality and heritage but one which has recently suffered through a lack of direction and investment. There's little doubt that owners General Motors could have made more of Saab, giving it more ammunition to challenge the German hegemony in the UK's premium car markets. As it was, the Swedish brand soldiered on with its two product lines, ultimately making a decent fist of a difficult situation. Used car buyers have these two Saab model ranges to choose from. The first Saab 9-3 was launched in 1998, a compact executive hatchback with strong safety credentials and underpinnings shared with the Vauxhall Vectra. Used second hand versions are priced very reasonably these days and you'll only pay a little more for a pre-owned convertible model or a high performance Viggen derivative with a healthy appetite for front tyres. The second generation 9-3 was launched in 2003 with sharper styling and an upgraded interior. Saloon, Sport Wagon estate and Convertible models were available. Second hand car buyers looking for a larger Saab will need to look to the 9-5, a model on sale in the UK from 1997 all the way through to 2010 with only limited cosmetic changes. A strong car at the outset felt somewhat tired by the end and the new 9-5 launched at the 2009 Frankfurt Motorshow couldn't come soon enough. Used cars are commonplace and people valuing a comfortable ride and relaxed driving experience might still like to consider buying a used 9-5.
