Situated west of London in the South East of England, Berkshire often shortened to ‘Berks’ is a historical and ceremonial county. Home to Windsor Castle the county was appointed with the title ‘the Royal County of Berkshire’ back in 1957 by Queen Elizabeth. The county is managed by the six authorities; Reading, Slough, Bracknell Forest, West Berkshire, Wokingham, Windsor and Maidenhead. Geographically it is located South of Oxfordshire, North of Hampshire and neighbours Buckinghamshire, Surrey and Greater London.
Steeped in history the county got its name from the word Bearroc which translated from Celtic means hilly. The county has a long running history in the IT industry with the presence of companies such as ICL and Digital. Microsoft, Oracle and many others have taken up residence in Berkshire and it is well known for its high tech industries.
Also famous for its horse racing, Berkshire is the home to Ascot race course which hosts over 25 races a year.
