County Durham is found in the North East of England next to Tyne and Wear and the counties of North Yorkshire, Cumbria and East Anglia. Durham with its own cathedral is the county town with Darlington being the highest populated town in the area. Other towns in the region include Stockton-on-Tees and Hartlepool. County Durham is the one county in England with the pre-fix of ‘County’ before its name.
Historically County Durham was known for its mining pits however these closed towards the end of the 20th Century with the miners’ strike of 1985 bringing them to a close.
There are many things to see and do in County Durham as it is a county full of surprises. It’s most famous attraction is probably Durham Cathedral which is known all over the world. You can also visit the castle, Durham Dales, the open air museum along with taking walks in the tranquil and beautiful countryside. Beamish – the Living Museum of the North is also worth a trip where you can discover what Durham was like back in the 1820s and early 20th Century.
