The county of Middlesex is located in the south east of England. The majority of the area comes under Greater London and is positioned north of the River Thames and west of Central London. The name Middlesex derives from Anglo-Saxon times and means ‘land of the middle Saxons’. The Saxons were recognised by the knives they carried and this is represented on the county’s emblem to this day with three knives and a crown of the county’s coat of arms.
